ESA Contracts Terran Orbital to Deploy Nanosatellite from Space Rider Robotic Laboratory

Published:

  • Terran Orbital’s subsidiary, Tyvak International s.r.l., awarded $4.7 million contract by the European Space Agency for an in-orbit servicing mission.
  • The mission will see a nanosatellite perform proximity operations around the uncrewed Space Rider, demonstrating advanced in-orbit servicing capabilities.

October 25, 2023, BOCA RATON, Fla. — Terran Orbital Corporation (NYSE: LLAP), renowned globally for its satellite-based solutions predominantly catering to the aerospace and defense sectors, declared today that its wholly-owned international subsidiary, Tyvak International s.r.l., has secured its position as the prime contractor. This comes under a contract worth $4.7 million or €4.5 million by the European Space Agency (ESA). The contract pertains to a proximity operations and in-orbit servicing mission, wherein a nanosatellite spacecraft will be deployed from Space Rider, ESA’s uncrewed robotic laboratory.

The nanosatellite, once deployed, will carry out proximity operations maneuvers around Space Rider, setting new benchmarks in in-orbit servicing. Space Rider, an innovative piece of technology, promises technology demonstration. Furthermore, it contributes significantly to research in diverse fields such as pharmaceutics, biomedicine, biology, and physical science. As it completes its mission, the Space Rider will make its way back to Earth, where its payloads will be unloaded, following which it will be refurbished to undertake another flight. Tyvak International plays a pivotal role in developing the nanosatellite that can be onboarded and launched at any phase during the experimental orbit, as part of ESA’s Space Rider missions. This paves the path for subsequent recurring servicing tasks.

The contract also sees collaboration with a consortium of esteemed Italian industries and research entities, notably the Polytechnic University of Turin, the University of Padova, and StellarProject SRL.

“Terran Orbital is honored to be selected once again for a prime contract with the European Space Agency,” said Marc Bell, Terran Orbital Co-Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer. “Using space technology for research in areas such as proximity operations and in-orbit servicing will be a huge benefit for our partners and the protection of precious and strategic orbital assets. I am excited to see Tyvak International s.r.l. in the forefront.”
