September 28, 2023, MUNICH and HERNDON, Va., Artel, a renowned provider of secure network communication services to U.S. government agencies, has recently been granted a Commercial Satellite Communications Proliferated Low Earth Orbit (p-LEO) contract by the U.S. Space Force. To fulfill this significant contract, Artel will be joining forces with Rivada Space Networks, aiming to provide the next-generation network that is crucial for supporting U.S. Government communications.
Based in the U.S., Artel stands out as a carrier-agnostic network integrator. This unique position allows the company to craft tailored solutions for its clientele, ensuring cost-effective and timely delivery of both global terrestrial and satellite network communication services. Additionally, Artel offers cybersecurity, risk management, and information technology solutions.
Currently, Artel utilizes first-generation LEO constellations to facilitate secure communications for government operations. With this new partnership, Artel and Rivada Space Networks will collaborate to guarantee that the latest advancements in secure space architecture are accessible for mission-critical connectivity on a worldwide scale.
Rivada’s innovative “OuterNET” comprises a global low-latency point-to-point connectivity network of 600 low earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This groundbreaking architecture combines inter-satellite laser links with advanced onboard processing. Such a combination results in an optical mesh network in space, known as “orbital networking.” This method ensures data remains in space from its origin to its destination, establishing an ultra-secure satellite network with comprehensive pole-to-pole coverage. The first satellite launch for this project is anticipated in 2025, with global service commencement expected in 2026.
Ed Spitler, Head of Satcoms Programs at Artel, expressed the company’s commitment, stating, “We are committed to delivering state-of-the-art technology solutions to the US Government. The Rivada constellation brings a new level of security, performance, and global reach that will enable our customers to not only expand their current networks but also address new market opportunities. We are excited to partner with Rivada to provide the next generation of secure connectivity.”
Declan Ganley, CEO of Rivada Space Networks, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are delighted to be working with Artel and honored to be one of a limited number of LEO solutions trusted to provide solutions to the USSF. Rivada’s OuterNET will solve essential connectivity and security challenges for government communications globally.”
