Tune in Wed, Sept 20 @1pm ET: NASA to Host Media Teleconference on Deep Space Optical Communications

Published:

  • NASA has scheduled a media teleconference for 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 20, to discuss the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology.
  • The DSOC technology is set to launch aboard the Psyche spacecraft and aims to revolutionize deep space communications.

September 15, 2023, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Southern California, NASA has announced a media teleconference for 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 20, to discuss a groundbreaking technology that could redefine the future of deep space communications. The teleconference will focus on the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology, which is set to launch aboard the Psyche spacecraft on October 5, 2023.

While the DSOC will not relay Psyche mission data, it aims to test high-bandwidth optical communications to Earth during the first two years of the spacecraft’s journey to the main asteroid belt. This technology could enable data rates at least 10 to 100 times higher than current radio telecommunications systems, allowing for higher-resolution images, larger volumes of science data, and even streaming video to be transmitted to Earth.

How to Tune In:

The teleconference will be publicly accessible and interested parties can tune in via NASA’s official website.

Participants and Leadership:

Participants in the teleconference will include key personnel from NASA Headquarters and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. Arizona State University leads the Psyche mission, while NASA JPL is responsible for the mission’s overall management, system engineering, integration and test, and mission operations.
