NASA Taps Spire Global in Race to Develop Advanced Microwave Sounder for NOAA

Published:

  • Spire Global has been awarded a $4.6 million contract by NASA for NOAA’s Sounder for Microwave-Based Applications (SMBA) Phase-A study.
  • The company will compete with three others to develop a Microwave Sounder, with the potential for integration into NOAA’s NEON program series of LEO satellites.

VIENNA, Va., August 31, 2023 — In a significant move that underscores the importance of advanced Earth observation, Spire Global, Inc., a frontrunner in space-based data and analytics, has announced its selection by NASA for a $4.6 million contract. This 12-month contract, granted on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will see Spire participate in NOAA’s Sounder for Microwave-Based Applications (SMBA) Phase-A study.

A New Era in Earth Observation

During this pivotal phase, Spire will be in competition with three other contenders to develop a state-of-the-art Microwave Sounder for NOAA’s Near-Earth Orbit Network (NEON) program. The stakes are high: at the conclusion of the 12-month period, one sounder from the finalists might be chosen for further contract phases, potentially leading to its integration into NOAA’s NEON program series of Low-Earth orbit satellites. The anticipated launch for this initiative is set for no earlier than 2030.

The data harvested from the eventual Microwave Sounder promises to be transformative. It will offer invaluable insights into a range of atmospheric properties, including temperature, humidity, cloud cover, and composition.

Commitment to Understanding Earth’s Dynamics

“The NOAA LEOS program series is facilitating a new phase of Earth observation driven by technology, innovation and a commitment to understanding our planet’s dynamic systems,” remarked Chuck Cash, Vice President of Federal Sales at Spire. He further added, “We’re proud to leverage Spire’s expertise in satellite technology to advance Earth observation and empower meteorologists, scientists and researchers with more precise insights into atmospheric properties.”
