- Mynaric, renowned for its laser communications products, has been selected by the Space Development Agency (SDA) to spearhead an optical ground terminal demonstration slated for 2025.
- The collaboration aims to establish a robust connection between space-based optical communications terminals and Mynaric’s state-of-the-art optical ground station, setting a new standard in the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.
Laser Revolution: Mynaric and SDA Join Forces for Optical Ground Station Breakthrough
Los Angeles, August 22, 2023, In a move that promises to redefine laser communication technology, Mynaric, a leader in scalable laser communications products, has announced its collaboration with the Space Development Agency (SDA). The partnership is centered around an optical ground terminal demonstration, with the mission set for 2025, aiming to showcase the successful integration of space-based optical communications terminals (OCTs) with an optical ground station, a brainchild of Mynaric.
A New Dawn in Laser Communication
Joachim Horwath, Chief Technology Officer of Mynaric, expressed his optimism about the collaboration, noting, “The collaboration with the SDA marks a significant milestone in advancing laser communications technology and paves the way for enhanced connectivity in the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.” He further highlighted the crucial role the ground station will undertake in ensuring high throughput and unwavering communication resilience for the SDA network.
The primary goal of this R&D initiative is to amass data from the connection between the space-based OCTs and the optical ground station. This venture is perceived as a risk mitigation measure for future demonstrations focusing on communication between the optical ground station and the Tranche 0 Transport Layer Space Vehicles.
Tim Deaver, Vice President of US Government Sales and Strategic Solutions at Mynaric, shared his insights, stating, “We were honored to be approached by the SDA to provide this pivotal laser communications technology and support for this project. Delivering highly sensitive information and data to the ground is an essential component of enabling seamless data transfer across all domains.”
Solidifying Mynaric’s Leadership
This partnership further solidifies Mynaric’s position as a trailblazer in the laser communications arena, encompassing space, air, and ground domains. Mynaric’s terminals, tailored for mass deployment, have previously been the choice for SDA programs by industry stalwarts like Northrop Grumman, Loft Federal, and Raytheon.
