NASA Entrusts KBR and Intuitive Machines with $719M OMES III Contract

Published:

  • KBR, in a joint venture with Intuitive Machines, has been awarded a $719 million contract by NASA to provide multidisciplinary engineering for critical space orbital systems at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
  • The OMES III contract will support the Joint Polar Satellite System program, which is vital for weather forecasting, and NASA’s Exploration and In-space Services projects division, focusing on sustainable technologies for spacecraft servicing and in-space assembly.

Houston, TX (SPX), Aug 15, 2023 — KBR (NYSE: KBR), a global provider of professional services and technologies, has announced a significant milestone in its longstanding relationship with NASA. In a joint venture with Intuitive Machines (Nasdaq: LUNR, LUNRW), known as the Space and Technology Solutions team, KBR has been awarded a contract valued at $719 million. This contract, known as the Omnibus Multidiscipline Engineering Services III (OMES III), marks a pivotal step in NASA’s ambitious space exploration and technology projects.

A Trusted Partnership for a New Era of Space Exploration

This collaboration is tasked with providing multidisciplinary engineering services for some of NASA’s most critical space orbital systems. The work will be conducted primarily at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Maryland.

“We are pleased with this new business award. The world’s leading government agencies and commercial enterprises rely on KBR’s innovative solutions to complex challenges both on and off the planet,” said Byron Bright, President of KBR Government Solutions U.S.

Pioneering the Future of Weather Forecasting and Beyond

The OMES III contract is set to last for a five-year period. It is a cost-plus-fixed-fee, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract that will play a crucial role in supporting the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) program. The JPSS is the backbone of both short- and long-term weather forecasts, providing critical data that informs public safety decisions and scientific research.

Advancing In-Space Services and Technologies

In addition to supporting the JPSS program, the OMES III contract will also directly aid NASA’s Exploration and In-space Services (NExIS) projects division. This division is at the forefront of developing groundbreaking, more sustainable technologies to service spacecraft and pioneer in-space assembly and manufacturing.

As part of OMES III, KBR will provide a wide array of services, including electrical engineering, instrument systems and technology services, exploration and mission support services, as well as mission engineering and systems analysis. These services will encompass the study, design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, verification, and operations of spaceflight, airborne, and ground system hardware and software.

A Legacy of Excellence

KBR has been a steadfast partner to GSFC for more than 35 years, with extensive experience in all phases of mission operations, ground systems engineering, and spaceflight instrument development. This new contract is a testament to KBR’s enduring commitment to excellence and innovation in the aerospace industry.

“As a partner with Intuitive Machines, we are proud to support NASA’s development of space orbital systems with our unparalleled spaceflight engineering expertise,” Bright added.

With this contract, KBR and Intuitive Machines are set to play a central role in the next chapter of America’s journey into space, contributing to projects that will expand human knowledge and capabilities beyond Earth.
